A NEW WORLD…EVERY DAY!
At the first sign of spring, I love to take a stroll around the yard and toss the remains of winter out of my many flower beds, careful not to uncover the delicate growth too early but anxious to see the promise of life.
I have many perennials established with a nice assortment of Hosta, Black-eye-Susan, Daisy, Clematis and Peonies to mention a few.
With some very warm days recently, things are greening up nicely. Looking out the window this morning my eye was drawn to a splash of purple on very tall stems. Appearing almost overnight, they came up behind a bench made from a large slab of concrete on blocks from a piece of the old feed bunk used here on the farm. Much to my surprise, I had a lovely stand of Phlox! I say much to my surprise because I don’t remember planting any. I have always admired Phlox, the tall stemmed flowers, not the groundcover. Puzzling!
There is a saying that I find to be true about perennials. It goes the first year they sleep, the second year they creep, and the third year they leap.
What I have decided is this. The more I ponder the appearance of Phlox in my perennial bed, I may remember possibly buying a plant a few years ago. I could have planted it there, and it may have blended in with other perennials. The next spring, their year to creep, they may have bloomed. This, the third year, they leaped into my life, full bloom, gracing my garden!
My point is simply this. When I cannot remember what I had for supper last night, how can I possibly remember planting a flower three years ago? So thank you mother nature for the surprise… my Phlox! I can hardly wait to see what else I forgot about that may magically appear this summer!
Happy Gardening!
