In my mind, I can easily count 12 chairs, 2 benches, 2 swings and a hammock in my yard. These all have comfy cushions and a view that overlooks my flower gardens, home, lake and endless fields. A canvas that in any direction is a reflection of the blessings that God has painted in my life.
In my real world, as I go outside to enjoy this wonderful setting, I take my tea and a book to settle in and read, relax or reflect. I don’t even get comfortable when I spot a weed or stick, something out of place in a garden or spent blooms that need to be dead-headed…leaves on the porch and just look at the dust on these tables…there goes my plan of relaxing and reflecting.
Why do we do this to ourselves? Do we not need, deserve or require this down time? Before I realize how much time I have taken to tidy up the area that I had planned to enjoy, it is time to go in. A little more spent than I was before I walked out, I now face the tasks at hand inside. So I leave the clean and well-groomed porch, yard and gardens for no one to enjoy and I go in, but oh, they look so nice…SERIOUSLY!
This became even more obvious to me one afternoon while I was in one of my ‘gotta-get-things-perfect’ modes! As I started off of the porch, I spotted Mikey, our golden retriever, waiting patiently! I had shooed him out of my way countless times until he finally gave up. SHAME ON ME!
It was that moment I realized my dog was wiser about this thing we call life than I was! No matter if I have been gone a minute, hour, day or even a week he greets me with the same excitement and enthusiasm. Oh, to be appreciated like that is priceless! But how often do we actually take the time to acknowledge it?
Life is short. Life is precious. Let’s not miss out on the simple pleasures. Take time to relax, refresh and rest. It will make the daily task at hand seem almost enjoyable! So, please … PLAY BALL!
…Mikey is a rescue dog from the local dog pound, but I’m not sure who rescued who. Thanks, Mikey!
