Early mornings at Slipknot Farm the homestead comes to life as the sun comes up, aided by the resounding crow of one distinguished rooster, knowing it is his calling and doing the job very well, without ever taking a sick day!
There are certainly mornings on the weekend when Eliza wished the rooster had a snooze button or even an off switch, but once her feet hit the floor and the coffee begins to brew, she opens the oversized door leading out to the front porch and welcomes the day with a smile. As she pushed open the old-time screen door with its familiar creek, Cody, her big yellow cat zipped by her to be the first one out. He loved to situate himself on top of the old wooden fence and watch the clouds drift by. She often wondered what he could be thinking.
As she poured her first cup of coffee and walked out to take a fresh look at her garden, she spied JoJo and Pete walking toward the fence. They had already been out and about to greet the day.
She sat on the swing by the garden, enjoying her coffee and taking a moment to just breathe, in and out, listening closely to each breath. Savoring every moment cleared her mind. Finishing her coffee, she started out to the corral to visit JoJo and Pete. It didn’t take but a moment until Sadie, Sophie and Sugarplum were on their way to say hello as well, hoping for a morning treat.
As she passed by the barn door, just inside stood Bentley, feathers ruffled, and head held high as if waiting for her to thank him for bringing her out to greet this marvelous morning. Reaching into the feed bag to grab a handful of corn, she did just that! He obliged her with a nod. She answered him with, “See you in the morning,” and continued her stroll.
